We did a kitchen reno and got first use of the new fridge unit in the middle of August. Since that time we've delightedly gotten to enjoy its features and there are no complaints to speak of at this particular time. I*t's huge.

Regarding black strips from the doors

Submitted by Susan - 9/20/2017

Have used this refrigerator several times for various clients, as well as myself - we have had the black sides painted to match the cabinetry - electrostatic painters can do this. Just make sure to remove everything from the freezer and fridge before painting if already installed.

Warning!! Do not buy if u want a built in look

Submitted by Kristin - 9/19/2017

I am doing a complete home remodel including the kitchen. I bought this refrigerator because it was French door, panel ready and cabinet depth. I have owned many kitchenaid appliances in the past and have been pleased with them. When they installed the refrigerator this week, I was shocked to find out that it is not fully integrated. Why have panels on the front when you have to have 3-4 inches of black showing on the sides!! Very poor engineering and dishonest advertising. It has ruined the feel and look of my kitchen.

False advertising! Looks horrible!! do not buy

Submitted by The designer - 9/19/2017

I got this for a client. It showed on product page with a picture of flush fridge with panels . We made cabinet surround at 29 deep. Deeper than needed by specs. Like other complaints I now have read, the unit cannot be pushed all the way back and the sides of the door are 4" thick and black not covered by panel. It does not look anything like what was expected or advertised on product page. If they showed on the product page how it would really look half of the complaints would never happen. And people like me would not have purchased as it is not what we wanted. The refrigerator took weeks longer than expected then arrived totally damaged on the side. I called the distributor & they said they could ask whirlpool for a credit. We did not want to wait 6 to 8 weeks again & I thought the whole side of the refrigerator would be covered so we accepted a credit. I was gone while they installed the refrigerator & came back in horror to see this eyesore in the beautiful kitchen. Not at all like what they had on the product page. On top of the damage on arrival, and it not being like the product page/description the freezer panel will not stay attached. The 2 upper doors were attached not a problem but the bottom panel continually falls off it is ridiculous. I contacted the distributor & said I do not want the credit for the damage as this is not what it is supposed to be & it was damaged & the front panel is faulty. They supposedly went back & forth & kitchenaid said they gave a credit for the damage that was at delivery, case closed no returns. I am escalating this with kitchenaid. I am not eating this refrigerator! As per the 100s of reviews I have now seen all over online you have a problem with your product description page! You are supposed to be a good brand that stands behind your product. I am a contractor & Designer & you have been my go to brand for most kitchens. This was the 1st time trying this refrigerator & it is an unacceptable mess!

Not so awful as these amateurs think

Submitted by Builder - 9/19/2017

This refrigerator will work if you have any common sense. The dimensions and rough openings are listed. I would bet that most of the custom kitchen cabinets were bought at a discount major retail dealer where the customer and the salesman had no clue about what they were doing. If you had a cabinet shop build your cabinets, you picked the wrong shop. I build houses and I build cabinets. I don't have a problem with this. It makes me laugh to read these reviews. You people are something.

Response to Kitchen Aid

Submitted by Furious - 9/11/2017

Dear KitchenAid Response; My cabinet casing was made exactly to the specs of the unit that are online. The problem is that although you market this as Counter Depth and Panel Ready and promise it as having an "Integrated Appeal" along with a photograph of a FULLY FLUSH unit- this is in fact, not true. I call this a clear sense of misleading and false advertising. In reality, this unit can NOT sit flush with surrounding cabinetry no mater what the casing specs. . In fact, due to the thickness of the doors, (about 4' -WHICH ARE BLACK) and the need to be able to OPEN the unit, it will protrude. Again, this is unlike the photo on their advertisement/Product Details. After 25 min on hold and 5 phone calls to Customer Service I was told KitchenAid doesn't offer refunds and to call the dealer. I will be reporting this to the BBB. Disappointed. Don't order.

Picture showing the wood panels is not this Refrigerator

Submitted by Jim - 9/11/2017

Watch if you are looking at this refrigerator. The picture with the wood panels is actually of one of their built in units not this cabinet depth model and this refrigerator will look totally different. I was looking at it online and glad I actually found one at a retail store to see what it really looked like. Because it really wasn't going to give the look I wanted and I didn't want to pay double the cost for the built in unit I want with a black stainless which looks nice. I was replacing an older Amana that has wood panels and had a stainless trim around the edge of the door. There are few units on the market now that you can put wood panels on and none of then give a great look since there is no trim on the door edge so you see 2.5" of the black color of the door edge and then the wood panel on the front. They really should change the picture to one of the actual refrigerator and not the built in unit as it is really misleading. The rating I gave is because of the looks not the refrigerator itself.

Submitted by Furious - 8/24/2017

FALSE ADVERTISING! This is a terrible unit and shame on KitchenAid for not addressing this after all these customer reviews. I am another customer who is devastated after seeing our beautiful kitchen design totally ruined! THIS IS NOT COUNTER DEPTH AND WILL NOT LAY FLAT AS PICTURED. The unit sticks out at least 3 inches past your custom casing to allow the french doors to open. It is also BLACK. If you have White cabinetry and plan on using panels to blend it in ( extra money to have custom panels) this is what you get. Totally unacceptable. KitchenAid has a pre scripted response and since it's not BROKEN I'm stuck with this stupid thing.

Measure twice cut once!

Submitted by Glowplugv - 7/23/2017

I just installed this model in my totally remodeled kitchen so I am going to focus on the install to provide some warnings for next buyer. My kitchen contractor (who does a lot of work with Kitchenaid appliances) created a cabinet for the normal counter depth. The problem is that there are water lines run along the back of the refrigerator. These are strong, stiff lines and instead of having a elbow to enter frig, they are bowed outward (see picture). The end result is that the frig cannot be moved closer to the back wall than 1.5 to 1.75 inches. You do not want to force these lines as they will not bend. Another depth eater is the electrical plug (second picture). It is right angle plug but it is at least 0.5 in high. There are flatter plugs that could have been added to the electrical line to save space. While not related to Kitchenaid, I would recommend that the open end of the water valve be directed to the left. In my case the water valve was slightly to the right and that made it difficult to coil the line. Just something to be aware of when you have the connections placed. The two Kitchenaid problems will require that we add wood strips to the current cabinet enclosure to build it out (fortunately it will work with the rest of the cabinets). We may even do a cut-out in the wall board so the water line can go bit into the wall. These are things you might not catch from the specs, so be sure to consider them in your install. Given we have only operated for 4 days, the frig is very quiet, ice making looks to be plentiful and the cold water feature is great. I highly recommend this non-through the door setup for ice as when I was reviewing the refrigerators the common complaint was the small size of the ice capacity and failures with the ice maker/delivery system. This configuration should provide the most reliability and is great for us since we have only two of us in the home. I'll report more on it when I've had it in operation for awhile.

Flaws in design

Submitted by Linda - 7/22/2017

I loved my previous built-in Kitchenaid refrigerator so when we remodeled another home, I ordered this "counter depth" one, unaware of the black sides which was going into my white kitchen. After having a hissy fit over that, I have finally gotten used to it. However, I just spent the past hour cleaning up a spilt chocolate pudding that ran down the entire back wall of my refrigerator. Whoever thought it was a good idea to NOT extend the glass shelves all the way to the back wall!!! There is a 2-3 inch gap that I have spent countless time trying to retrieve items that have fallen off the shelves. Thank God it wasn't fish because I would have had to trash the entire refrigerator. There is no way even after removing every drawer and shelf to get at the nooks and crannies to properly clean up the mess.

Gotta say I like I - the reviews are true, but it is NICE.

Submitted by Dr Tasso Pappas - 6/24/2017

I would carefully read the reviews. It's true that this is not a built-in looking refrigerator. It is counter depth but for the doors to open there's gonna be some of the black sides exposed. I'll try to post pictures later. But our white kitchen with a black island looks perfect with these exposed sides. It's a really useful refrigerator with lots of interior room and we love the water dispenser and the overall look. The one big negative it is loud for a refrigerator, in the sense that it always can be heard humming. Not terribly loud but constant and continuous gentle humming. Overall we still love it we paid her sears clearance price for it was certainly worth it.

Lemon, not the fruit. Not counter depth

Submitted by Jake from State Farm - 4/17/2017

The fridge is randomly freezing foods, have it set at 44 degrees. Service company is still fixing it. They said this is a very uncommon problem. Which tells me It's a lemon. Waiting in parts. It stick out inches outside of the cabinet just like the other pictures shown. Kitchenaid and our original dealer are looking into possible fixes. Our appliance dealer is bending over backwards. Kitchenaid is being very generic with responses. Technician has noted all descrepancies with no action from kitchenaid to remedy the real problem. I have a half working, freezing random foods and drinks, thousands of dollars eye soar... kitchenaid HELP

So after reading all the reviews... I am shocked !!! Sorry but did you not do your home work. We are building a home and I am all about having the panel frig. I have done SO MUCH research. I have called kitchen aid they were so nice to send me the specs. Also my cabinet company clearly knew that this would stick out further then your counters. Its not a built it. Which I agree is $$$$. Would love to have built in. The appliance store ( not your local big box store ) also warned me about see the black on the frig. My builder even knows about this. So I guess before you start blaming kitchen aid. I guess you should start blaming yourself for not doing your home work. Google its a beautiful thing.

False Advertising

Submitted by Adrienne - 1/24/2017

We bought 7 (Yes, 7!) KitchenAid appliances for our newly built home. Three of them were panel ready. This refrigerator was the worst. The image displayed on the website is incorrect. The advertising implies that you will achieve a built-in look - you won't. To make matters worse, KitchenAid seems to be unapologetic to the concerns of its customers - the extra time, cost and creative measures they have to pursue to try to get this terribly designed appliance to fit in with their kitchen designs. My cabinet installer is still wrestling with this. I will tell him about the 1/4" panels that another poster suggested. I wish this feedback was available when we originally purchased prior to construction. I would have gone with another manufacturer. I WILL NEVER buy another KitchenAid appliance. I've already posted on BBB. If you are considering this appliance, please know that it is not as advertised.

I am having the same issues as what other reviewers have described. This refrigerator IS NOT COUNTER DEPTH READY! it clearly states in the item description "This 72-inch refrigerator is three inches taller than a standard counter-depth refrigerator" I called customer service and they tell me that the dimensions are clearly listed in the guide. however, even if a contractor followed the dimensions their is no way for the doors to open because when the doors open they extend wider than the refrigerator. This would mean this refrigerator would have to be free standing. the only way to use this refrigerator in a counter depth scenario would mean to have any cabinets to the left or right of the refrigerator be 24" in depth and allow the refrigerator stick out like a soar thumb. the review left in December shows the issue perfectly if a kitchen is designed with a pull out pantry. the pantry can not be accessed from one side because the refrigerator is sticking out past the cabinets. To reiterate my point, even if the cabinets to the left or right are custom fabricated to the dimensions of this refrigerator a gap of about 3" would have to be left to allow the hinge of the doors swing open. I did not design a custom kitchen to have gaps in between my cabinets. To throw salt on the wound, the ice maker takes way too long to fill the ice tray. I will be filing a complaint with the BBB and consumer reports. The fact that most of the reviews describe the same issue shows fault resides with the manufacture and description of this product.

deception fraud

Submitted by North Louisiana - 12/29/2016

You have got to be kidding Kitchenaid...you clearly do not care about the amount of money that all of us reviewers have wasted not to mention time and energy on trying to resolve the problem. The time span over which reviewers have been posting the problem of this not actually being a built in counter depth fridge because of improper hinges and yet it is still for sale? THE CANNED RESPONSE that Kitchenaid shoots out to some of the reviewers just adds insult to injury. Every single person should not only be refunded for the amount of the refrigerator but for the endless hours and leave time from work lost to themselves and contractors. We've been attempting to come up with a solution assuming that a reputable company such as Kitchenaid has it right and that we are just missing something when in fact Kitchenaid does not have it right at all. All of us reviewers need to take the time to report this to the better business bureau but Kitchenaid you need not worry (clearly you are not) because most of us probably have little energy left beyond writing this review to follow up with BBB. As you can see from the photos I don't even have proper access to the pullout cabinet to the right of my fridge because the refrigerator has to be left sticking out because of the wrong hinges you designed it with! I have a newly remodeled kitchen all full of Kitchenaid and I am one of many reviewers with similar stories and you have nothing to say more than the same canned response? Does your one other panel front that is much more expensive have this same issue? If not, how about replacing everyone on here's lemon Kitchenaid with that one at your cost? You would still be coming out way ahead if we left it at that given all of the money everyone is out for contractors? There is no excuse for not doing the right thing to remedy this situation for everyone.

I don't need to beat a dead horse. If Kitchenaid cared they would post a picture of the black sides that stick out once you panel this refrigerator and also note the side clearance needed. I promise that one little additional picture would make customers feel like there was no deceptive marketing here.

Submitted by Ron - 11/1/2016

We are remodeling a condominium unit for a client and they selected this refrigerator assuming is was counter depth......well it isn't. As previous reviewers stated with the unit installed it sticks out the thickness of the doors plus panels. And the doors are black......It is not designed as a counter depth refrigerator and should not be advertised as one. In order to make the installation even look passable, we are going to have to cut the back of the wall out to move the unit further back to hide the black doors. Then expand the opening in the built in cabinet to accept the swing of the doors beyond 90 degrees. If we don't you can't get the drawers out. Incredible

I bought this for my new kitchen to be panel ready. It works great and we like the icemaker and water dispenser but it's black and I have an all white kitchen. You might think that it should not matter because I put white panels on the front but it sticks out a few inches from the counter in order for the doors to open and the exposed section is black. It just looks ugly. Don't know why they don't offer it in other colors, they should if you ask me!

Submitted by Debbie - 8/15/2016

Apparently, all of us who purchased this refrigerator are not very smart because we expected this to sit flush with our expensive built-in cabinets. The ad refers to it as counter depth and integrated. No way is this integrated, it sticks out like a sore thumb! From all of the reviews that I've read, KitchenAid has disappointed many faithful customers. This is my third KitchenAid kitchen and it will be my last. KitchenAid has done nothing but give lame apologies, nothing to really accept any blame or give any sort of consideration Shame on you KitchenAid!! Very, very misleading product.

Love my Counter Depth Refrigerator

Submitted by Betty - 8/5/2016

Love everything about my refrigerator. Counter-depth is perfect - I also had the studs turned to gain another 2-1/2" to recess the refrigerator further to align with the counters. Love the storage capacity, love the interior water dispenser, there is more than enough space for everything, and for keeping items easily accessible and organized. Food stays fresher, longer. Storage bins keep produce fresh, shelves are plentiful and I'm able to keep foods organized. Freezer drawers are perfect for organizing various shapes/sizes and find items easily.

Submitted by Sad owner of a new ruined white kitchen - 7/29/2016

So incredibly disappointed in this fridge and the false advertising. Like the many others who left bad reviews, I purchased this fridge when it first came out and I had wanted to achieve a flush mounted look, but the hinges do not allow for any clearance on the left and right of the fridge so it needs to stick out 4-5 inches in order for the doors to open. When I built my house I built a lot of cabinetry around this fridge based on the measurements provided. My kitchen is all white and the black sides of this fridge sticking out are a complete eye sore. Even If I were to return this fridge and purchase a different flush mount fridge it would cost me ten thousand + dollars to rebuild the cabinetry around it so that a different fridge could fit. I have all kitchenaid appliances in my house and absolutely love them, but I am sooooo disappointed in this fridge and feel incredibly mislead. The reason I am giving it two stars is that the fridge itself (minus the HUGE issue with it not achieving the look) is really good. The size is perfect for my family of four. I love the built in water dispenser and the ice machine with the drawer that can lock. It is so unfortunate that it does not function as shown in the pictures or as advertised. I am also incredibly disappointed that based on all these bad reviews from customers that Kitchenaid has not come up with some kind of solution. At this point, I would be willing to pay up to a couple extra thousand to be able to make this fridge fit.... but there's no options or support from kitchenaid. Why they continue to still sell this fridge blows my mind. No words can describe the disappointed.

Perfect fit

Submitted by Quinner - 7/22/2016

Our pre-retirement check off list consisted of making sure we purchased big ticket items that might require replacement in the immediate future. Our old fridge never fit the preexisting cupboard space and was showing some signs of old age. The requirements were tight, requiring a counter depth but shorter height fridge. The one fit like a glove. Apart from the fit, the interior is a design plus. With the personal addition of a few "lazy susan's" to maximize space for minimally used jars of sauces and condiments, the smaller cubic foot size is not an issue...everything at a quick arm's reach without moving things around.

RE: Appliance Guy

Submitted by Another Appliance Guy - 7/20/2016

Appliance Guy is absolutely right. I sell appliances and I have been selling this model for 5 plus years straight even when it had the curved Architect series handle. In that time frame I have had one issue which was a sealing issue on the bottom freezer and that was taken care of with ease. This is an industry where problems arise people. Do you expect to buy a car and never have any issues? The only negative thing I have to say about this refrigerator is the black frame makes it hard to design around white cabinets or lighter cabinets in general. Otherwise keep up the great work KitchenAid!!

A word about these 1 star Reviews

Submitted by Kevin456789 - 7/14/2016

After reading all these 1 star reviews (well, all the reviews) and seeing the fridge in person, we did order it. 1) The picture on the Kitchenaid website IS very misleading. They must have a 1.5" space on both sides of of the fridge in order to open the doors and still have the front of the door flush with the rest of the cabinetry. Plus all their cabinetry must be 30" deep, not the typical 24". 2) If you have a 36" wide space that is 72" tall but not 84" tall and you want custom panels, this may be your ONLY option. 3) This is a mass produced fridge that comes in 5 color options (one of those being custom panels) so it is less than 1/2 the cost of other custom panel fridges. 4) The body itself is cabinet depth. The door itself is designed to stick out past your cabinetry, but much less so that their cheaper 28 cubic foot fridges. 5) Our current fridge that died is a similar type, so the shape itself is not a problem for us. Our main problem is the color. We have a white cabinet kitchen and our existing panels are white. We will need to order new panels anyway as it is a different fridge, but the metal trim that holds the panels in place is black and Kitchenaid does NOT sell any replacement trim kit in white and they also confirmed with me that painting it will void the Kitchenaid warranty. We are currently debating having an eclectic kitchen with brown wood panels vs painting it white and getting matching white panels. Since we have the Abt extended warranty, which painting does NOT void, do we really care about the Kitchenaid warranty? 6) I do foresee those short shelves being a problem, but we have no other choice.

your salesman didn't do his job

Submitted by Appliance guy - 7/12/2016

i am an appliance salesman and have this fridge at my house personally. This is a counterdepth fridge NOT a built in fridge. Kitchenaid did not mislead anyone the salesman who sold you the fridge didn't do his job in explaining the difference between a counterdepth fridge and a built in fridge. I could go on for days about this but after reading most of the reviews the problem is not the fridge it is either the salesman didn't inform the comsumer properly or the customer just ordered without knowing truly what they were buying. This is a great fridge and it doesn't deserve the reviews that his gotten. BY far hands down the most popular item i sale when it comes to counterdepth refrigerators. Has been for years.

Mostly a good product but a few definite design flaws

Submitted by Sarah - 6/7/2016

While I would have loved to put in a built in refrigerator, it was not in the budget. this was still a spendy option but less than 1/2 the cost of a built in. The panels look great but the cost of having the cabinet maker build them and the cost of appliance handles probably added another $600 to the cost. Please also be aware that if you are looking to conceal the refrigerator a bit the panels of course help but the refrigerator itself, the sides of the doors, do show and are black. It worked with my design but definitely would be disappointing in some designs. I suppose you could go through the hassle and expense of painting them but again, added cost. Other color options would be nice. As for the interior, a HUGE disappointment is the fact that the glass shelves do not reach all the way to the back refrigerator wall causing items to fall off the shelves in the back to the shelf below. You can not store items with a smaller diameter near the back or they will fall to the next shelf and there is no way to adjust that. Seems like something one would learn in design 101 but definitely overlooked here!

This is a lovely fridge, trouble is its being sold as a flush mount panelled unit, see photos, it is not, it sticks out 4 inches, it cost me $12000 to fix the problem, do not buy, deceptive marketing, fridge for sale cheap!

Watch out for door clearance

Submitted by Steve - 6/4/2016

Interior of refrigerator is well designed. Installation directions are less than helpful. They call for 1/2" space for the cabinet all around the unit. The doors will not open with 1/2" clearance. For flush mount of the custom panels, we needed 1 1/4" clearance for the doors to open.

DO NOT BUY THIS FRIDGE! You will be shocked! It looks nothing like the pictures on the website. This fridge is black and ugly. The black doors have to stick out 4-5 inches in order for the doors to open and not bang into your cabinetry. The hinges used on this fridge make no sense, the top of the paneled door keeps banging into the cabinets on the side of the fridge. My kitchen designer and contractor are stupefied by this fridge, no one knows what to do. It has ruined my new kitchen. I have spent the last 3 months with my cabinet makers to come up with a solution and still have not. There is NOTHING "intergrated" about this fridge. I will pursue Kitchen Aid and the store I ordered the fridge from until I get a new fridge, this model is a lemon!

Just had installed today and it looks horrible. I have white cabinets and the black fridge sticks out 4-5 inches. Panel ready should be flush with all cabinets. I am sick and don't know what to do now. We are out the fridge (as I do not want this look in my new kitchen), and out the money for the custom made panels. I will have to have builder redesign with added cost for a new fridge, and panels again to be made, not to mention the added labor for the redesign. Kitchen Aid should be ashamed to not have disclosed that the panel ready fridge would not be flush with your matching cabinets and that you will have a 4-5 inch black portion on each side of fridge that will show. Very disappointed customer and will definitely not recommend Kitchen Aid to anyone.

Deceitful False Advertising!

Submitted by Babelyn - 4/14/2016

I purchased this unit after looking at the pics on the kitchen aid website. It was described as a "counter depth" panel ready fridge. What they fail to mention is that this model must stick out about 3 inches in order to open the doors! Therefore it is NOT counter depth and there is NOTHING "intergrated" about it. The pics and description are false and deceitful! Shame on you Kitchen aid!!! I saved for years and spent a lot of money to have my dream kitchen to end up with an ugly BLACK fridge that ruins the look of my custom made WHITE cabinetry. No where in the description does it describe or explain that this unit only comes in black. I will NEVER purchase anything from Kitchen aid ever again and will warn anyone and everyone not to either. I will use every available resource, Internet, Facebook, Twitter, etc... To worn other consumers not to make the same mistake! I want my money back!!!

Not a Built in!!!

Submitted by Kitchen Designer - 4/8/2016

First, to the contractor who says to build a deeper area to slide it in..... yes, it would look great in a photograph, problem is, the doors would not open. Kitchen Aid has not learned to use zero clearance hinges on this refrigerator. The way the information on this appliance is presented is very misleading. I would think that Kitchen Aid would have a little more integrity and be honest about this being a built in.

This is my 4th Kitchenaid frig but it will be my last. More cheaply made than my other ones - didn't even come with a butter keeper for the door. It is not counter depth - it extends out 5 inches so the hinges work. It looks terrible. The pictures online do not match the product at all. There is no "ExtendFresh Temperature Management System" and the interior shelves don't miss the description.

'Black band' solution

Submitted by Creative Homeowner - 3/20/2016

We had our cabinet maker create 1/4"-plywood pieces in the same finish as the door panels, and then attached adhesive magnetic strips to the back of the pieces. They hold to the sides of the doors and freezer drawer and create the custom finished look that everyone is hoping to achieve. You just have to measure below the hinges and inside the gasket seal for a proper fit. (Approx: doors 43 x 2-1/4", drawers 23 x 2-1/4")

Depth of unit black band

Submitted by Pro Install - 3/8/2016

To respond to purchasers who complain about the "black band" showing, I blame that 100% on installer error. I am a building contractor for 35 years, and if it's the flush built in panel look a client is after, it's obvious by the closed unit dimension without handles, which l believe to be 27.5", common sense tells you a pocket needs to be constructed behind the fridge to allow the unit to become flush to the wall and base unit doors. My advice on a resolution, research your contractor's experience in kitchen installs. This is NO WAY a manufacturer issue, more like contractor /home owner ignorance.

We purchased this fridge hoping to have the built in/paneled fridge shown in the picture. Instead we have the same hideous 5 inch black gap that everyone is talking about on a white paneled fridge. Building in a refrigerator is not cheap and time consuming, so what a disappointment and loss to then not be satisfied...all because the appliance design doesn't enable your cabinet builder to make the job right. When we purchased this fridge for our kitchen the reviews on this site did not yet exist and now....they do. For all of our new appliances we put a large effort into researching to try to put the best things in our forever home. Such a disappointment.
